How Typing Speed and Accuracy Are Measured

Typing speed is reported in words per minute (WPM), where one "word" is standardised as five keystrokes. Gross WPM counts everything you type, while net WPM subtracts your errors โ€” which is closer to how recruitment exams actually score you. Government tests often express the same requirement as key depressions per hour (KDPH); for example, 35 WPM is roughly 10,500 KDPH. This test shows gross WPM, net WPM, accuracy and error count live so you always know where you stand.

The key to improving is to build accuracy first and let speed follow. Rushing produces errors that most exams penalise heavily, so a steady, controlled rhythm beats fast-but-sloppy typing. Short, regular practice sessions are more effective than occasional long ones.

Preparing for a specific exam layout? Our Typing Hub has dedicated tests for the InScript (Mangal) and Kruti Dev (Remington) layouts used in CPCT, SSC and state exams, each with an on-screen keyboard.

Frequently Asked Questions

Words Per Minute (WPM) is calculated by taking the total number of characters typed divided by 5 (the standard word length) and then dividing by the duration in minutes. Net WPM is calculated by subtracting incorrect words from the gross WPM.
